October 21st was Meridian’s annual pink out for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Students dressed from head to toe in pink to show their support and help our school spread awareness, some even bringing face and body paint to go all out. This year we had a new edition where we sold pink shirts for this year’s pink out and we sold 131 shirts.
Rylee Bankston, Junior, who bought one of these pink shirts says “I think this was a good idea this year since it helped spread awareness around the school. It also was really fun to see more people wearing pink and we get to wear them on Fridays too.”
But why wear pink? In 1992 Estee Lauder popularized the color when she distributed millions of pink ribbons to draw attention to the cause later creating the internationally recognized pink ribbons for October. Today, this is celebrated all around the world for many reasons to raise awareness, encourage early detection, support research, and provide solidarity for those affected. It has beneficial effects such as spreading awareness for symptoms or risks to women around the world, funds research towards better treatments and other helpful foundations to those affected.
Some ways you can participate are wearing pink throughout October and encouraging your community as well, make donations to local foundations or even organize your own fund raisers. While October is almost over you can always participate next year!
