Mrs. Ramirez, 6th–12th grade Librarian and EE coordinator at Meridian World School has done a fantastic job here at Meridian, with her bubbly personality and her ambition of answering curious minds, some may wonder: what’s her story?
Her adventure first started out as a high school English teacher, where she realized that her students weren’t ready for 12th grade. Concerned, Mrs. Ramirez set off to teach middle school, to help better prepare her students for their high school education. She really enjoyed teaching middle school as she says “ I really understood where they were coming from, and where they needed to be”. To further advance her knowledge, she went to UT to get a masters degree in Library Science, which is now classified as ‘Information science’.
In college, Mrs.Ramirez worked as a librarian at a bilingual elementary school, where she did her practicum, and was able to connect with lots of students.“The principal at the bilingual elementary school wanted me to continue to teach there once I graduated, but I missed teaching middle school, I loved it”.
Once she graduated, she worked with middle school students at Meridian with the experience of teaching elementary, middle school, and high school; each one having different challenges that she overcame. As she describes her librarian experience, “I’ve been really lucky because I’ve been able to collaborate with cool teachers and constantly learn something new from them”.
Mrs.Ramirez says she likes working with Meridian because it’s a small school and Meridian has more focus on research and conceptual learning, while other schools teach you skills in isolation, Meridian is just a unique school that build on true human connection. She likes her job as a 6th–12th grade librarian as she says “I love that I get to watch them grow from middle school to high school.” She also appreciates that she gets to work with students who are working on their EE. This helps her build connections with students since she doesn’t see high schoolers often. As she also says “I love being a english teacher without the grading”
One of Mrs.Ramirez’s favorite events to go to as a librarian at Meridian is the TLA (Texas Library Association) conference. At this event, many librarians and authors get together to listen and meet talented authors that present their work and publications. The purpose of this event is for librarians to discover and share new works and technology that benefit their schools.
Overall, Mrs.Ramirez has done an outstanding job with working with students at Meridian. Having experience teaching elementary, middle and high school students, she is able to improve student outcomes through her developmental understanding from each obstacle she has encountered. The Meridian community appreciates everything she has done, and looks forward to continuing working with her in the future.
