The Meridian Girls Varsity Soccer team has stormed into the new season with confidence, determination, and unfinished business. After last year’s remarkable run to the state championship game, where they finished as state runner-ups, the team returned this spring more motivated than ever. Their mission is clear: take the final step. So far, they are doing exactly that.
Undefeated and unscored upon, Meridian has quickly established itself as one of the most dominant teams in the league.
The team opened the season with commanding victories, consistently controlling possession and setting the tempo from the first whistle. Sophomore Shiloh Ehiemua says last year’s ending still fuels the team’s drive.
“We haven’t forgotten what it felt like walking off the field at state,” Ehiemua said. “That moment drives us every single day. We trained all season with one goal in mind: to finish what we started.”
Instead of getting pulled into back-and-forth battles, Meridian has dictated nearly every match. Crisp passing, organized defensive structure, and relentless pressure in the attacking third have kept opponents on their heels. Sophomore Jackie Hernandez Salazar credits the team’s composure and preparation for their early success.
“We focus on playing our game every time we step on the field,” Hernandez Salazar said. “Even if we’re winning, we stay consistent and work even harder.”
One of the biggest strengths behind Meridian’s perfect record has been its defensive dominance. Anchored by sophomore goalkeeper Audrina Baham, the team has yet to concede a single goal. According to Ehiemua, communication is the foundation of that success.
“Our back line talks constantly,” Ehiemua explained. “Defense starts with everyone, not just the defenders. When we press together and stay organized, it makes it easier for everyone.”
Team chemistry has also stood out as a defining quality this season, especially with new players stepping confidently into varsity roles. Hernandez says the positive dynamic has elevated everyone’s performance.
“This season our team dynamic has been amazing,” Hernandez said. “It’s been so fun with so many people who make the team stronger.”
Preparation for the Girls Varsity team extends beyond physical training. Mental focus plays an important role as well.
“To mentally prepare for each game, my friends and I pray before each game,” Ehiemua shared. “To physically prepare, we do stretches that really help make sure we don’t cramp up.”
When asked about the key to maintaining their undefeated record, Hernandez pointed to one consistent theme: communication.
“I think the best strategy for winning games is communication,” Hernandez said. “Communication is key because if you don’t talk or listen to your teammates, you could miss warnings that can cost you the ball. When we communicate, it helps us create opportunities and score.”
She believes that continued communication and sharper passing will determine just how far the team can go this season.
“I think this year our team can achieve a successful season together if we communicate and consistently make better passes,” Hernandez said. “I know we can make it to state and win.”
The season has already produced memorable moments. For Ehiemua, the highlight is simple but powerful.
“My favorite and most memorable part is that we have not been scored on and we have won all our games,” she said.
Hernandez has also made an immediate offensive impact. Though stepping into varsity competition can be intimidating, she says the team’s support made all the difference.
“I was slightly nervous at first playing on a varsity level,” Hernandez admitted, “but everyone has been so supportive. They have pushed me to be confident and just go play the game and have fun.”
Ehiemua offers simple but meaningful advice to younger girls who dream of playing soccer one day.
“Listen to your team captains because even though they could be yelling at you, they’re only trying to help you and make you succeed.”

With an undefeated and unscored-upon record, the Meridian Girls Varsity Soccer team is not just winning, they’re setting the standard. As league play continues, their communication, leadership, and unity remain their greatest strengths. If they stay focused and hungry, this could be the season they return to the state and finish what they started.
