Tuesday February 3rd was a big day for boys varsity basketball, playing in the Basketball Area Championships against Texas Empowerment. While there wasn’t a win for Meridian boy varsity, it was still a very important and special game for the team.
Senior Patrick Asiedu, shared “The last game of the season was one of our toughest matchups of the year. We beat this team in the Area Championship last year and they’ve been out for us since.”
The game ended with the final score of 72 to 76, with Texas Empowerment pulling away at the buzzer.
The lead switched back and forth between the two teams, no one knew who would win. Meridian fan Rylee Bankston, a spectator at the game, mentioned “the scores were neck to neck the entire game, both teams were really talented.” Unfortunately in those final 30 seconds, Texas Empowerment took the lead with the winning shot.
While it must have been a hard loss for the team it was still a good game. This season has been a good one for the team, playing their hearts out with each game, one after another. They played their hardest and tried their best, clearly improving from game to game.
Senior player Krish Bhalani, who recently made his 1000th point of his high school basketball career, mentioned “It was a tough game, but well fought by our team. The season was a great success otherwise with many young talents growing, and we had an undefeated regular season record.”
Similar to what Patrick shared “To me, the game didn’t really mean that much to the season because we had our best season in a while, going undefeated (10-0) in league play. I’ve been so honored to play with this team for two years. They’ve given me an experience of a lifetime that I won’t forget. We should be proud of ourselves even though we didn’t go as far as we wanted.”
This Meridian basketball game was one of the best games they have played, the competitiveness and tension of the game really revealed all of the players’ talents and strategies under pressure with such close scores. It’s exciting to see what will come of the team next year!
