Under the bright lights of the Frost Bank Stadium court, Meridian took the floor for one of the most anticipated matchups of the season, both boys and girls varsity against the school Founders.
Boys’ Game Recap
The boys’ game kicked off the evening and from the very start, it was clear it would be a close game. To prepare for the game, junior Michael Cyr, says that the team ”developed game plans offensively to use our assets to attack their defense, and devolved game plans on defense to try to find ways to stop their most dominant players on offense”.
Meridian came out strong, pushing the tempo and matching Founders intensity. With both teams trading baskets, big rebounds, and tough defensive stops.
In the second half, Meridian continued to play strong, confident drives to the basket. Despite their hard work, Founders was able to gain a small lead in the final quarter, hitting key shots that made the difference. Meridian kept pressing until the buzzer, but ultimately fell 48–52 in one of their most competitive games so far this season.
Even in the loss, the boys showed good teamwork, communication, and resilience qualities that promise even more improvement as the season continues. “A moment that stood out to me is when we were down by so much and we locked in and made a comeback, making it a 5-point game” Colton Elbers says. “And Samuel almost getting posterized” Micheal adds.
Girls’ Game Recap
The Meridian girls took the court ready to make a statement. From the beginning, they played with heart and intensity, battling against a tough and well-coordinated Founders team. Meridian hustled for every loose ball, fought for rebounds, and kept their defensive pressure high. Natalia Stepanov says, “knew Founders was a hard team to face, …Although we didn’t win, I feel the team pushed through and played really well throughout the game.” Leilani Bunton adds, “ we still went with a positive attitude to have fun and enjoy the experience, because only few teams get to play on the spurs court”.
Although Founders took an early lead, Meridian never gave up. Players continued to push the ball up the court and look for scoring opportunities, even when the game became challenging. Their perseverance and positive attitude displayed true Meridian spirit.
“No matter the score, we just have to keep playing and give our all. Even if we lose, if we play well and stay determined throughout the whole game we should be proud of ourselves and our team.” Natalia says. Both games served as a reminder that progress is about more than the scoreboard; it’s about learning, improving, and coming back stronger.
Although the night ended with two losses, both Meridian teams showed determination, pride, and a strong competitive spirit. The Frost Bank court saw players giving their all, learning from each possession, and representing their school with heart. As the season continues, the hard work shown tonight will only push them forward. Meridian fans have plenty to look forward to, and both squads are ready to come back stronger than ever.
