The anticipation towards a high school rite of passage has been building up right here at Meridian. Juniors and Seniors can’t seem to stop talking about the Prom coming up this weekend, April 11th.
Prom, short for promenade, is a formal dance held for Juniors and Seniors toward the end of the school year, signifying the end of the academic school year. With the requirement to dress up in formal attire, students arrive in long dresses, suits, and tuxedos, with a night filled of dancing, photos, and excitement.
Being held at Celebrino Event Center in Georgetown, Meridian upperclassmen are looking forward to a night Under the Sea, and a time to hang out with friends and enjoy each other’s company. With a DJ, caricature artist, possibly a photo booth, and other vendors, the night is looking like it’s going to be a major hit.
This exciting night does not go unplanned. Admin and volunteers dedicate much of their time to assure that Prom night will be one to remember.
The head parent volunteer of this year’s Prom, Hannah LeBreton, leads the planning to make sure the night goes smoothly for months leading up to the big day.
Stella Holcombe, DP Principal and admin. in charge of Prom, describes how the head volunteer “plans and purchases all the materials to bring the theme to life”. Homcombe further discusses all the hard work that goes into the special night. “There is a lot of advanced planning. We have to book a venue at least a year in advance”, which is why the tickets are sold months in advance, and “no tickets are sold at the door.”
The planning does not go unnoticed. There is much buzz amongst students and admin looking forward to the event. Junior, Eden Linnartz, says, “I’m excited to take photos and have fun with my friends and go to the beautiful venue.”
Senior, Yeabsara Weldesenbet, describes how she is looking forward to her last formal high school dance. “I’m looking forward to getting ready with friends, taking photos, and going to dinner. I’m so excited to spend my last prom with my high school friend group.”
Senior, Gabre Reeves, shares, “I’m excited to see all the different dresses, and to be on that dance floor.”
Holcombe also adds how she hopes that students “take away great memories of dancing and having fun together.”
Some advice from Ms.Holcombe includes;
-
If you are doing pictures and dinner out, start early … don’t do these things and then arrive to prom 2 hours late!
-
If you have friends who are always late … beg them to get it together so they don’t make everyone else late! prom is from 7-11pm.
-
I would advise everyone to arrive by 8pm at the latest! you get first pick at the food if you come early!
-
And overall have fun!
