Christmas break is coming soon, and winter has finally arrived! Meridian is hosting its 14th annual Winter dress-up week, and students can’t wait to celebrate with its unique and festive themes. Every year, select teachers and the Student Council unite to decide on categories that spread school spirit and holiday cheer before the start of the two-week vacation, and both the middle and high school participants share their excitement for this coming celebration.
“With this being my first year in middle school, I can’t wait to experience my very first holiday dress-ups,” shares 6th-grade student Ellie Morgan. “I’ve been shown pictures from the previous years, and I can’t wait to get into the fun!”
The inclusion of specific “dress-up days” in spirit weeks began to show in the mid to late 1980s, and today, schools across the nation plan these, often in December, to build excitement and celebrate the last week before the end of the Semester. The overall purpose for these fun week-long events is to boost morale, promote creativity and self-expression, and build community with experiences that will be remembered for a lifetime.
This year, Meridian has rounded up a small collection of four amusing ideas, and time to get creative for this week’s witty themes— starting strong with Monday’s holiday accessories! This is such an enjoyable theme due to the diverse array of accessories you could choose from. From Santa hats and jingle bell bracelets to reindeer ears and Christmas lights, anything that fits the holiday spirit will fit in— just remember to keep the bottoms school-appropriate, even while dressing up!
Tuesday keeps the momentum going with Ugly sweater/Holiday sweater day, a usual fan-favorite full of competition and laughter. Whether it is bright with tinsel, stitched with snowmen and reindeer, or even handmade with decor, every sweater brings warmth for the cold days and humor to all. Again, festive flair is definitely encouraged, but remember the outfits follow school guidelines.
The middle of the week takes a slightly different turn with our monthly College Shirt day, giving students a chance to show off their school pride, wear family favorites, and share where they hope to end up in the future. It’s a casual and unspirited reminder of the educational journeys ahead.
Finally, students are able to unwind with Thursday’s pajama day, a cozy conclusion to the short week of fun. From matching red, green, and black flannel pants to festive warm sleepwear, Pajama Day is the perfect way to relax and feel comfortable as the first semester of the school year comes to a close.
“Winter dress-up week is one of my favorite weeks of the school year,
In conclusion, no matter what day of Winter Spirit Week is your favorite, it is all about community, creativity, and celebrating the joy of the season together. So, grab your sweaters, accessories, and holiday PJs, because Meridian is ready to take on the Christmas spirit to close off the year!
