Last week, Meridian art and theatre students took a trip to UT Austin for a fun filled Friday! Their day consisted of activities like going to see the musical production Cabernet, and also visiting the Blanton Museum of Art. A total of 51 students, 30 from art and 21 from theatre, joined Ms. Crowl, Ms. Fajardo, Ms. Vain and 5 other chaperones, all of which highly enjoyed it.
“This is the third year I have taken students on this trip and every year we see a fantastic performance at UT Theatre and Dance” Ms. Crowl mentioned. They all seemed to really enjoy the musical production, also sharing “It was a beautiful, shocking, heartbreaking, and thought provoking production.”
Afterwards, they also had the chance to discuss with the cast and crew including Meridian alumni Diego Rodriguez from the class of 2024. Theatre student Charlotte Hayden shares similar thoughts on the play saying “It was a masterfully directed show and the visuals and story totally blew us away. What a wonderful interdisciplinary experience!”
Taking a route towards the Blanton Museum, Ms. Vain mentioned it was her favorite part consisting of a wonderful tour around and getting to speak with Blanton’s curator of works on paper “She engaged the students in a conversation about the conservation of fragile artworks on paper and difficult decisions she makes as a curator.”
Getting to walk around and learn about the history of each painting was definitely a favorite from many including one of our students from the art group, Yusra Salahuddin who mentioned “I enjoyed seeing all the paintings at the Blanton with my friends, it was really interesting getting the opportunity we got to learn a little about the history of each one.”
This trip was not only a special experience for our students and teachers but it also was a great learning lesson for many students. For theatre students it’s a great way to interact with one another and seeing a live play really connects the class in ways you can’t at school regularly. As well for our art students, getting to see art and having discussions about it and its history really gets you learning on another level. That’s what this whole experience was really about, getting to learn about our classes and about one another in a fun new environment you wouldn’t be around on a regular basis.
