The Meridian girls’ varsity soccer team punched their ticket to the state championship tournament on Saturday, April 5th, with a dominant 7–0 win over IDEA South Flores.
This victory marks the soccer program’s first-ever Area Championship and State tournament appearance.
“I feel very great and proud of my team. I have watched our team grow and develop after all the hard work we’ve put in over the past four years. It feels like a really great end to my final season at Meridian, and I’m excited to take the same success from our regionals to our state game,” said one senior team leader.
The Lady Lions have seen remarkable success this season, winning every game in decisive fashion—without conceding a single goal. Much of that defensive strength can be credited to team captain and defensive anchor Lilliana Russel, who not only commands the field as a center-back but also leads vocally, keeping the entire backline in sync.
“I believe that our aggressiveness and ability to give one hundred percent is why our defense finds great success,” Russel said.
While their defense laid the foundation, it was only a matter of time before the offense found its rhythm. Heading into halftime with a modest 1–0 lead, the game seemed to be unfolding at a slower pace. But after the break, the Lady Lions came out with renewed energy and firepower, scoring six goals in rapid succession.
The offensive burst came from Annika Beckwith (2), Abigail Sirngot (2), Lily Phillips (2), and Paula Perez (1).
“In the second half, we played at a much faster pace. Our connections were a lot better, and we had many more goal-scoring opportunities, which ultimately led to better finishing,” said Phillips.
This win carries extra weight for the team, as every game from here on out could be the last for the eight seniors hoping to extend their high school soccer careers. For the underclassmen, it’s about more than just advancing—it’s about playing for their teammates.
“It gives me a lot of motivation to play as hard as I can because I don’t want it to be our last game,” one underclassman shared.
Riding this momentum, the team now has a week to prepare for the State Championship tournament, set to take place on Friday, April 11th, at Texas State University in San Marcos. The girls hope to bring home some hardware after what has already been an incredible season filled with grit, growth, and determination.
With their sights set on the ultimate prize, they’re ready to leave it all on the field and make their school proud.
GO LIONS!
