As spring sports come into season, so does the long-awaited soccer season for Meridian students. All three teams are focused on training hard to play hard during this season, because in the back of their minds lies a desire to win the first soccer championship for our school.
Although it’s early in the season, the boys varsity team has played well together. However, a struggle has been finding ways to work together in order to win more games than in previous seasons.
“We are doing well so far, winning our first league game 5-0, we create good shot opportunities and overall are doing well as a team both offensively and defensively. We have a few small set tactics that we need to work on but I am confident in us as a team and I think we will make it far this season”
Boys Varsity Soccer’s record currently stands at 1-1-2. Recently, they have started to gel together as a team successfully on and off the field, improving their team chemistry with 12 new faces joining the team since last season.
“I’m unsure on how it will go playing on the field because it is my first year playing but my teammates are very supportive of me because they are more experienced and understand the game enough to help me, ” said Joe Bailey.
Along with Boy’s Varsity’s success, Girl’s Varsity has faced its fare share of successes and challenges.
With Girls Varsity currently holding a record at 2-0 wins to losses, they have shown growth throughout the first practice to now.
“I think that our season has gone very well so far and our team’s spirits are very high. We have a lot of new players but I feel as though that is helping us create a very fluent team,” stated Laurent Ramert.
Despite seeing success early in the season, there have been a multitude of small obstacles that the team is looking to overcome together.
“I think the biggest challenge is all of our seniors leaving next year. This is an issue because our coach is trying to train us up and make us better in order for us to carry on our team in the future. Due to this training is very difficult compared to previous years” said Angela Chavira
“Another challenge for our team is learning to play in different field conditions. Due to the fluctuation of the weather we have to play in different areas so we are learning so adapting to the different circumstances has become very necessary.” Stated Elisa Ehiemua
Whether it’s the top opponents on another team or the aspect of simply having fun while playing, both teams have strongly demonstrated what it means to be unified within a team and truly love the sport you play.
