For many young basketball players, the dream of playing on an NBA court feels out of reach. But for Meridian’s boys and girls basketball teams, that dream became a reality for the second straight year at the Frost Bank Center, home of the San Antonio Spurs.
“The feeling is unreal. I always see my favorite players on that floor, and to be in their shoes—it’s cool,” said senior Fenix Barrera.
The boys’ basketball team dominated Valor North with a commanding 63-24 victory. Junior Krish Balani led all scorers with a game-high 26 points. Sophomore Kobe Martey controlled the boards with a game-high eight rebounds and reflected on the experience: “I couldn’t believe it—I was on the same floor as the players I watch on TV.”
Playing in an 18,000-seat arena can be intimidating, but senior Joe Bailey, who contributed five points, embraced the moment. “I didn’t get to play on this floor last season, so for me, it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
The girls faced a tough challenge in their season finale, falling 59-9. Despite the lopsided score, the team cherished the opportunity. “Just getting to play on an NBA court is such a unique experience,” said senior Lily Castro, who scored a team-high seven points.
For sophomore Gabriela Garcia, the emotional weight of the game stood out the most. “Being on this floor for our last game together—it was definitely emotional,” she said.
While the girls’ season has concluded, the boys’ team continues their playoff push. They return to San Antonio on Saturday, February 8, for the TCSAAL Regional Championships, with their opponent yet to be determined.
