The Meridian Lions girls’ varsity volleyball season ended on Oct.19th, when they lost in four sets to Somerset Academy Collegiate girls’ volleyball.
Going into regionals at Jubilee High School, expectations were high, as the Lions had an undefeated record. Unfortunately, the Lions’ season ended abruptly against a solid conference team, breaking their two-year state appearance record.
Following the loss, Sophomore Alaysia Despertt commented, “I feel that this year we tried our best, and next year, I hope we can continue to stay strong and go further throughout the playoffs.”
For the six seniors on the team, this marked their last ever high school volleyball game.
Senior Lauren Ramert said, “It was bittersweet, but I appreciated every game as it was.” She continued, “Getting to know my teammates and making connections with them will last well beyond our time in high school.”
Although disappointing, this post-season loss had a few silver linings for Meridian Volleyball’s future. “We may have not advanced as far as we would have liked, but the younger players were able to grow their skills and show that at the end,” team manager Nate Martin recaps.
The volleyball program will continue to pride itself on its team chemistry and skills, making it a threat on the court in the upcoming seasons. This will also light a fire under returning players and motivate them to make a further run in the State Tournament next season.
