Since the school’s founding in 2011, students have felt a sense of FOMO over the lack of a football team. That may soon change.
This year, the school introduced a flag football team, generating buzz, especially among students in the Mays Building. While it’s not the tackle football some hoped for, it’s a step in the right direction.
Sophomore Domingo Rubio played a key role in launching the school’s first-ever flag football team. However, the team currently consists entirely of middle school students, as high school interest didn’t meet expectations.
“I’ve always wanted to play flag football at school,” said Rubio. Despite his initial excitement to coach, he found himself leading younger players when high schoolers showed less interest.
“Most of the boys wanted tackle football. Flag football doesn’t have the same appeal,” Rubio explained.
Undeterred, Rubio recruited 20 middle school students to form the MS Beast team. Despite losing their first three games, the players remain dedicated and united, both on and off the field.
Rubio describes the team as a family, supporting each other not only in football but also in academics. His leadership extends beyond the field, where he helps his teammates with their studies.
Although the team hasn’t received widespread recognition yet, the players’ commitment is unwavering. Their passion and determination have earned them support from parents, peers, and teachers alike.
The MS Beast team’s next game is on September 14th at Todd Knight Field. Come out and witness their dedication firsthand!
