The Women’s Empowerment Club kicked off its return to school this month with its first meeting of the year last Thursday.
The club meets biweekly on Thursdays during C Lunch and is open to anyone interested in making a difference. Its mission is to empower the women’s community at Meridian by creating a safe and supportive space for all who join to share ideas, build confidence, and support one another. Members say women’s empowerment is especially important in today’s world because it is something that often gets overlooked.
Meetings usually include discussions on how to positively impact the community and uplift women. Another highlight is the provided snack from a company founded by a woman, paired with a presentation about the founder’s story, her company, and her impact.
The Women’s Empowerment Club originally began with the class of 2025. After their graduation, Ana Sofia Harper-Araya, a junior at Meridian, decided to revive it this year. She explained, “I hope to spread the sense of community and make everyone feel better about themselves, not just in confidence but in the way we feel about ourselves as human beings. I hope they leave with the want to empower others and to impact people’s lives.”
Club member Avrie Molina-Sindrey added, “What I like about the Women’s Empowerment Club is how it’s not just girls—there’s a good mix of people. I also enjoy that they make sure we learn something every time through fun activities that keep us engaged.”
Looking ahead, the club hopes to volunteer at women’s organizations and shelters, as well as host a fundraiser to benefit one of those groups. While the focus is on women’s issues, the club welcomes everyone who wants to support causes like women’s shelters, volunteer work, and community empowerment.
