This year, Meridian has added something brand new to the school: uniform socks!
The idea began when Linda Chapel, the Events and Volunteer Coordinator, thought socks would be a fun way to support the school and raise school spirit, especially during homecoming week. Each pair sells for $10, and there are four unique designs for students to choose from. The goal is not only to raise money but also to build school spirit and support Meridian.
Chapel explained that the team chose socks over other items like keychains and beanies because they wanted something unique and not weather-dependent. The socks are designed to be worn year-round.
Bringing the sock project to life wasn’t easy. The designers and staff had to find designs that would appeal to both sixth graders and seniors. They also had to make sure the socks matched the school’s uniform rules, which meant they could only include the school colors—red, white, and black—and had to feature the school logo. Even with these challenges, the team is proud of the outcome.
Both students and staff have been looking forward to the socks. Sophomore Colton Elbers said, “I like the socks because I’ve never seen a school make socks with the logo on them, and I think it’s unique.”
Teachers have also shown support. World history teacher Mr. Miske said, “It’d be really cool to see students wearing fun socks on campus. I think it would improve school morale.” Overall, students and teachers seem to really like the socks.
The Meridian socks are a creative way for students to show school pride while staying within the uniform dress code. If you want your own pair, go to the Meridian website, scroll down to the newsletter, and click on MYP (6–10) news. Once there, scroll down until you see spirit socks with a link under the photo to place an order.
But there’s a catch: the socks are only available for a limited time. Currently, the socks are sold out, but they will be on sale again soon. Looking ahead, Meridian hopes this won’t be the last time special spirit wear is introduced. Who knows what the school may produce next year—but be sure not to miss your chance to show your school spirit!
