Meridian Soccer has seen a drastic increase in participation in the last four years, the sport went from just about nonexistent on campus to being one of their main sports. With multiple Meridian teams advancing into the playoff games, the school is buzzing with talk about soccer.
So far this season, both boys and girls varsity teams have put up incredible performances, boasting some of the highest win rates in Meridian Soccer history. The girls have had an extraordinary, undefeated season with a league record of 4-0; the boys also have an impressive record of 4-2, both losses being from Harmony.
The boy’s team shows up with impressive technical skills on the field and has many new talented players, with over half of the team being freshmen who have many years of soccer already behind them. The girl’s team showcases incredible teamwork and chemistry as they move like a well-oiled machine game after game.
Both the varsity boys team and the varsity girls team are playing their deciding game on Tuesday, April 1st, in Pflugerville at Northeast Metropolitan Park. The boy’s team will be facing off against Harmony, whom they have played twice before and lost to both times, however, the Meridian Lions are the only team to have scored on them all season, specifically Jayden Wambui, the starting left winger. He said that this game “we will without a doubt, be focusing heavily on defense”.
The girl’s team is also facing off against Harmony however, their record against Harmony is a completely different story, as they have already beaten them both times they previously met. Malana Poindexter, who plays right back on the varsity team, said she “feels like our team worked very hard up until this point, and I really think we have an opportunity to go far.”
The 24-25 soccer season will certainly be one to remember and hopefully isn’t quite over yet. Remember to wish luck to any soccer players you see in the halls and head to the games on tuesday to support your fellow lions.
