Martin Luther King Jr. is widely celebrated, especially in the United States. Every year, on the third Monday of January, the nation honors King’s life and accomplishments.
MLK Day, first proposed shortly after King’s assassination in 1968, was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 1983. His iconic speech, “I Have a Dream,” marked a significant step toward ending segregation. Although King’s life was tragically cut short, his legacy endures as a symbol of unity and the ultimate triumph over segregation.
Many people participate in various events across the country to honor King’s bravery in standing against decades of discrimination.
Locally, in the Round Rock, Texas, area, the Round Rock Black History Organization has hosted the MLK Jr. Walk for 38 years. Open to everyone, the event brings the community together to celebrate King’s vision of equality and unity.
Meridian World School has also embraced the significance of MLK Day by hosting its own annual march. For 13 years, the “MLK March” has been a growing tradition initiated by the Triple-A Enrichment Team.
“I don’t remember who initially suggested starting the tradition because the Triple-A Enrichment staff worked as a team to create events and activities for the students and community. However, I’m proud the event started under my supervision as the Triple-A Director, and I’ve continued to play an integral role in keeping the tradition alive,” said Monique Swain.
Students also recognize the importance of the march. Tristan Newball shared, “I think MLK Day and the march are great because we don’t have school, and his speech has influenced us for years. Without him, we wouldn’t be living how we live today.”
This year’s march was a great success, with a large turnout and a live performance by the Black Culture Choir. The event continues to grow, with the next march scheduled for January 15, 2025. Both students and staff are eager to participate in this meaningful tradition that reflects the values of Meridian World School.
